His Dark Materials is an epic trilogy of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman consisting of Northern Lights (published as The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. I only read the ‘The Northern Lights’ for the first time a few years ago, but as I was living in Oxford the story felt a bit closer to home and I was enthralled by the fantasy and the originality of the tale. As I had begun my teacher training at this point I decided to set myself my own project of designing a set of illustrations – one for each chapter of ‘The Northern Lights’. The first five images below are those that I feel most proud of and portray a variety of scenes from ‘The Northern Lights’. These images seem so vivid to me and really make the story come alive – I hope they do the same for you!
I have subsequently started to produce images from ‘The Subtle Knife’ and ‘The Amber Glass’, the sixth image below being taken from ‘The Subtle Knife’.
